In this day and age of jet travel, it is sobering to recall that travel in the Holy Land of the 19th century was mostly conducted at a pace determined by the means of transport and the condition of the roads. The Damascus Gate, which leads to the Moslem Quarter of the Old City, has in recent years witnessed great changes. Archaeological excavations have revealed the ancient Roman Cardo, one of the main arteries crossing the ancient city of Jerusalem.
