The Jews at the Wailing Wall , Jerusalem ca1912
This image shows women and children dressed in Shabbat finery. It is indeed unusual to see so many children at this site; evidence of a growing and more prosperous Jewish community at the beginning of the century. Earlier 19th century photographs of the Western Wall often portrayed ragged and miserable-looking Jews crouched in groups or leaning against the Wall.
PHOTOGRAPHER: YA’ACOV BEN DOV, 1882-1968
Ben Dov was born in Yakaterinoslav, the Ukraine, and as a dedicated Zionist immigrated to Eretz-Israel (Palestine) in 1907. From the moment of his arrival he was tirelessly involved in the building of the yishuv (Jewish settlement of the land) and in recording photographically many events, great and small, that took place. He knew all the Zionist leaders and artists of note, and his home, always open, was often the scene of heated political discussions. He photographed many of these leaders and artists as well as famous personages connected with the founding of the Jewish homeland, such as Lord Balfour. He died at the age of 86, having lived to see the reunification of his beloved Jerusalem where he lived. He is buried on the Mount of Olives.
